Your Water Supply
Rous Water is committed to providing a secure supply of high quality water that is healthy for the region’s population and the environment. This section of the website describes how we achieve this.
-
Healthy Catchments
Your water supply comes from the rainforests and agricultural areas of the Big Scrub region in Northern NSW. These drinking water catchments are protected in partnership with the local community, other government agencies and traditional Aboriginal custodians.
-
Our Water Sources
Water security is important for our region, especially with the impacts of climate change. Rous Water’s Regional Water Supply Strategy (1995) aims to provide sufficient quantity of water to supply the region’s needs until 2050 and beyond. Water conservation is an important part of this strategy.
-
Planning for Our Future
Rous Water is continually undertaking important projects to maximise the quality and security of a healthy drinking water supply for the region.
-
Water Distribution
Rous Water operates over 370km of pipelines, more than 12 reservoirs and small tanks and several pumping stations, distributing water to approximately 100,000 people. The system supplies water to many towns which include Lismore, Ballina, Byron Bay, Ocean Shores, Brunswick Heads, Evans Head, Coraki, Broadwater, Alstonville, Lennox Head, Bangalow and Woodburn.
-
Water Quality & Treatment
Raw water from the dams and river is treated with state of the art technology. Water quality is tested throughout the water supply system, including the drinking water catchments, to ensure that the water supplied to you meets the Australian Drinking Water Standards.
